In 2023, China’s shipment of lithium battery cathode materials reached 2.476 million tons, with a penetration rate of nearly 70% for lithium iron phosphate

Recently, research institutions EVTank, Ivy Economic Research Institute, and China Battery Industry Research Institute jointly released the White Paper on the Development of China’s Lithium ion Battery Positive Electrode Materials Industry (2024). According to the white paper statistics, the shipment volume of positive electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries in China was 2.476 million tons in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 27.2%, showing a significant decline compared to 2022.

According to EVTank data, in 2023, the shipment volume of lithium iron phosphate cathode materials in China reached 1.638 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 43.4%; The shipment volume of ternary materials was 664000 tons, a slight increase of 0.9% year-on-year; The shipment volume of lithium cobalt oxide was 80000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 2.6%; The shipment volume of lithium manganese oxide was 94000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 36.2%; The market share of lithium iron phosphate cathode material in the entire cathode material market has reached 66.1%, further increasing compared to 2022.

In terms of output value, the white paper shows that the total output value of China’s positive electrode materials industry in 2023 was 322.16 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 26.6%.
According to EVTank analysis, in 2023, the decline in upstream metal prices has led to a decline in the prices of various positive electrode materials. Among them, the annual average price of lithium iron phosphate positive electrode materials has dropped from 145000 yuan/ton in 2022 to 85000 yuan/ton in 2023. The annual average price of positive electrode materials, including ternary materials, lithium cobalt oxide materials, and lithium manganese oxide materials, has all experienced a significant year-on-year decline.

From the perspective of enterprise shipments, Hunan Yuneng, a lithium iron phosphate cathode material company, and Rongbai Technology, a ternary cathode material company, ranked first with market shares of nearly 30% and 15%, respectively.
Among them, the top ten enterprises in terms of shipment volume of lithium iron phosphate materials in 2023 include Hunan Yuneng, Defang Nano, Wanrun Energy, Longpan Technology, Rongtong High tech, Youshan Technology, Guoxuan High tech, Jintang Times, Anda Technology, and Jiangxi Shenghua. Among them, the newly entered top ten enterprises are Youshan Technology and Jintang Times.
The top ten companies in terms of shipment volume for ternary materials in 2023 include Rongbai Technology, Tianjin Bamo, Dangsheng Technology, Changchang Lithium Technology, Nantong Ruixiang, Beiterui, Guangdong Bangpu, Xiamen Tungsten New Energy, Guizhou Zhenhua, and Yibin Lithium Treasure, with Yibin Lithium Treasure being the new top ten company. Lithium cobalt oxide material company Xiamen Tungsten New Energy and lithium manganese oxide material company Boshi High tech ranked first with market shares exceeding 40% and 30%, respectively.
